"Christianity told us that it is good to be poor and the poor are better
than the rich"
That one statement pretty well sums it up for the purpose of christianity.
It protects the rich from competition from the poor, and keeps the poor
(slaves) locked into their status. The rest of it is just peace-keeping and
work-harder rah rah rah among the slaves, maximizing the profits that can be
derived from slavery.
