This is something like disinformation in your presentation!!!
Maybe is it very exotic for an American, but, in Europe, "charged" =
and "arrested" are nearly never synonymous, and the title of your =
contribution is definitely incorrect.
Father Samuel is well known since the early sixties as a rebel to =
the modernisation of the Catholic Church and he is a dissident from the =
Vatican Council (continuing to use latin for celebrating mass, bearing =
the traditional cassock, and so on); and he is suspended by the Church =
for over fifteen years ("suspensio a divinis" if I remember corectly, =
but I am not totally sure that is the right penalty he got). He has also =
been "selected" in the list of individual questionable or unlawful =
practices by the Parlementary Committee on Sects (self-proclaimed =
exorcist and healer, attracting large sums of moneys from unclear =
sources, the very typical profile of the guru).
The government has not to be implied in judicial procedures - there =
is something called "separation of powers" - and there is no "state" =
organisations, only private organisations accepted and subsidized or =
sponsored by state mechanisms (from all kinds of opinions), without =
interferences with the functioning and the daily decisions. The =
mentioned committee has hundreds of pending court affairs about racism, =
antisemisism and xenophobia (unlawful political slogans as well as =
police violence against immigrants or refusal to hire an appartment to =
foreigners).
Moreover, in the European judicial system, to be charged has no =
special meaning by reference to what will be decided : you may go to the =
court against somebody; if there are legal grounds, it will be a matter =
of "juridic technique", but never of sentimental arguments for a jury =
(except for a few crimes - murder, assasssination - there is no popular =
jury) nor of negociation. There are just several "stages" of technical =
decisions (for avoiding an excess of trials in a very slow system, there =
are first stages for deciding on the "technical qualification" and the =
possibility or not to go to the court, but also deciding on the level of =
the judicial system where a trial may be organised, and so on).
Incidentally but quite funny, Father Samuel just repeats from time =
to time old slogans where the words "Indian" or "Jew" (or, more =
recently, "Bosnian") has been replaced by the word "Arab".
