I did not read his thesis (I honestly couldn't bring myself to read it
because I wanted to disagree with it and I suppose did not want to be
persuaded otherwise - perhaps a cowardly approach, I don't know.); I only
read where he changed his mind and has now amended his premise and to his
credit has opposed the war and the present administrations policies. For
that I applaud him. I didn't read The End of History because I did not
accept that it was the "end of history" and was still in shock over the
fall of what I considered man's (no gender intended) last hope. I believe
the crux of his thesis was the fall of the Soviet Union proved that
capitalism won.
He is still a conservative just as a lot of liberals are still
anti-communist (and anti-socialist too) and I believe were on the cusp
between neoconservatism and conservatism and believed as Fukuyama did that
there was a profound change now that the U.S. had defeated its enemies -
not anticipating the problems of becoming the only remaining super-power
and not anticipating the possiblity of having a psychotic president of
that only super-power. That certainly presents other problems which I
believe he is addressing now and cause for much of the change in his
position.
I also don't have time to read everything but especially wish to avoid the
trap of folie a' deux, sharing the craziness.
