Alternative Energy

Oil depletion will cause us to run out of petroleum even if we did nothing
to convert/switch over to alternatives and we're doing far less than we
should be doing. We talk about it far more than we do anything about it.

But there will still be a need for oil during the process of conversion
because just the process of establishing alternatives requires use of
petroleum based technologies to manufacture and in many instances to use
alternatives and I'm not sure those problems can be adequately addressed
in today's world or even in the near future. AND, technology by itself
cannot solve our problem for getting over carbon based fuel/energy either
since you need energy to operate/to run the technology.

Our lives are going to change and change drastically. While we are now
enjoying new technology and much of it has become an essential part of our
culture we need to start thinking differently because the time is coming
fast when all that we thought about will no longer be the case and we may
not be able to afford - because of a lack of resources - to use the same
technology we now enjoy in our lives.

We will without a doubt need to switch to renewables and do it soon on a
wide-scale. With the rising cost of fuel we are going to see a trend back
towards urbanization. Those who live in the country will need to generate
some of their own energy and travel less. We also better start thinking
once again about mass transit systems where they don't now exist and where
they did exist and have been phased out -- and more efficient systems need
to be phased in.

Wind is one viable energy resource and we more off-shore wind turbines in
lieu of oil platforms, etc, where they don't interfere with migrating
birds and don't cause sound pollution but we also have to take into
consideration that parts for these new wind turbines are still being made
mostly with petroleum based products as is our cloths and everything that
uses plastics.

Coal extraction can now be cleaned better than before and carbon dioxide
is being pumped back into the earth but even with technology to clean coal
we don't have as much as once thought. There are the usual problems with
nuclear and even with all the alternative methods there are problems of
supply and how much they can do. Simply put, we are going to have to
change our live styles and do it with a whole lot less energy. We must
reduce our energy needs.

Your comments on this topic and the upcoming nuclear test in Nevada (you
did hear about Bush's nuclear weapons test in June, didn't you?) are
welcomed in [email protected]
