I read a recent op-ed by (I think it was) Brent Scowcroft. It was a sweeping
proposal for a mechanism of enriching uranium for civilian purposes. If the
mechanism had world-wide buy-in, then we would have a solution to this
nuclear crisis, and a template that allows dealing with more / future such
regimes (with urges to enrich uranium) in a cookie-cutter manner.
His proposal, like many ivory-tower proposals, looks great on paper. The
rub, or the difficult part, is obtaining the buy-in on the part of the
world's "responsible" powers. However, Brent Scowcroft has the diplomatic
credentials and experience and may have blessings from Bush-41.
If I were Bush-43 I would tell Scowcroft that he has to go into a two-minute
drill. I might give him 45 days to put together his global coalition,
aligning the support behind the proposal.
It is like "the last chance for peace." Truly, if the agreement cannot come
about, I am one who feels that Iran must be stopped, and I will be
supportive of Bush-43 in any further steps that he takes in this vein.
Could bombs be the October Surprise? Heck, if we follow my line of
reasoning, bombs could also be a June or July surprise. I am without very
much patience or sympathy for Ahmadinejad. To Scowcroft, I would be a
hardened "show me" type. If it is to work, that blueprint must come out of
the ivory tower, and get implemented in the real world, VERY quickly to save
the peace.
