I love the study of cosmology - galaxies, planets, star formation, black holes...When you look upon the cosmic, you are forced to recognize and accept just how Lilliputian you are. We do not know the hows, whys, and wherefores - but we concoct religions to attempt to explain what our puny human minds can not - and never will - grasp. Those religions have other purposes, too - to make us seem "special" and "superior." And, of course, we need to comfort ourselves in the face of ultimate death. I guess, too, religion serves to "control" the masses - to prevent them from thinking and acting. I believe we're a flash in the pan - we will relatively soon go extinct. That's the best thing for the Earth. It will live out the remainder of its existence, barring some intervening meteoric catastrophe, much more happily without our presence - until the sun burns out in 5 billion years. I was born a Jew - I feel a connection to my people, and I enjoy the Jewish holidays and traditions - but I do not believe in any organized religious dogma. Is there a God? Is there life after death? As to the former, I don't know. As to the latter, I suspect not. I am as afraid of death as anyone else. I will be 60 years old next year, so I'm probably more afraid of it than some of you "young-uns" on this list, since it's looming closer for me. I prefer to live with the unknowns and the fears than to accept the false comforts and specious promises of man-made religions. I'm an animal rights activist - and if I have helped even one creature while I've been here, then I will have somewhat compensated and atoned for the grass I've trampled on and the oxygen I've consumed. And I care abut people, too. What's going on in Iraq and at Guantanamo Bay breaks my heart. ----- Original Message ----- From: "warren greer" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Warren Greer" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Saturday, June 10, 2006 11:34 AM Subject: [pnews-views] Ex Nihil > ----- > / o o \ > ====OO=====OO=== > http://pnews.org/ > Progressive News & Views (since 1982) > ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| > Something Really Nice and Beautiful for > your Honey - http://blackhillsg0ld.com/ > Something Really Sexy for Her for Holloween: > http://tinyurl.com/q878y > > -- > > How nice to discover Closet Christian Scientists > in the midst of all this materialism!
