I just confirmed it, since I was pretty groggy when I wrote original post. It works fine using Version: 5.53-2, but the latest, v5.61, causes the error posted above. v5.61 was just released November 16th. On the positive side, I upgraded to last night's CVS of POE and now LWP::UserAgent is calling my &callback everytime data arrives instead of losing it somewhere. That's a good thing, I think.
