Just so you know. I didn't name this HSSF (Horrible Spread Sheet Format) for nothing. The deal is that these file formats....well....suck. They're ill-designed nasty spaghetti. It is amazing that people would trust their data to them. Its amazing their data loads in different version of Excel *ever*. Its very difficult to write these "correctly" and was a lot of work in POI (Poor Obfuscation Implementation refers to the crappy OLE 2 Compound Document format which is basically a fragmented uncompressed archive resembling the old DOS FAT filesystem).

OpenOffice and Gnumeric have better formats but XML is really not the answer to everything (memory consumption/file size is an issue in large files -- not that Excel's addresses that!). Also while some attempt to write decent code is made with Gnumeric -- Open Office's mangled C/C++ hybrid code is unfortunately harder to read, in most cases, than the Excel's format in hex dumps (I'm not kidding and BTW I can read the German comments). I cheer when Open Office opens because I'm amazed it can even start!

I state this like once a year to keep people thinking. Draw your own conclusions from the subtexts.

Finally found the problem....thanks to a friend using a newer version
Excel...

The problem was that there were some worksheets with duplicate names ( the
process renames the sheet to match the file name from which the data came
from...) In the flow multiple calls to the same output were made using
different selection criteria. I modified the process to rename the
duplicate sheets & the problem is resolved....maybe if my version of Excel
had actually created an error log (as it said it would...) I would have
found this already. Thanks for the assistance!!!

Hi Tommy.

Make a countercheck using an "empty" template.

That's the confusing part no templates are used. I can perform almost
every
function in Excel...until save/close function is tried....

Thanks,
Tommy Holden

Hi Tommy.

We had similar effects when copying and changig templates. Building the
templates from the scratch the problems were away. In our case it has
shown some "Unknown Ptg" warnings in that case.

I have a program which builds a multisheet xls file. Excel opens the
file
generated with all sheets as they should be. Problem is when I try to
Save
As OR just close the xls file Excel crashes. The message states that an
error log is being produced. The only file I can find that is produced
is
empty....

Anyone else have any experiences with this? We are on POI 2.5.1
