May I bring to your attention that: Jan Karski, the Polish Underground WW II courier, is back home, discharged from the hospital, with the prognosis of full recovery, but there may be need for another intervention. Having been born in 1914, he is at an age when surgical treatment is more stressful and risky than it would be for a younger man. I have been told by people close to him that Get Well wishes would cheer him up. At the same time let me tell you about his recent pledge of $100,000 to establish a scholarship fund under the aegis of "The American Center of Polish Culture" on the condition that his donation be matched by $100,000 from other donors. Twenty thousand dollars have already been raised. Once the funds are matched, "The Professor Jan Karski Scholarship Fund" will help students from Poland to study in the U.S. While it is a modest project, let us not forget the old adage: It is better to light one candle than to curse the darkness. According to the Center's Jonathan Starzyk, the applicants, young and preferably at the start of their studies, will be able to choose any field, but they will have to prove commitment to ideals that Jan Karski has exemplified, such as opposition to anti-Semitism, amity amongst people, especially those of Israel and Poland, propagation of democracy - surely I need not tell you what this man has done and stood for. "Get Well" wishes (or correspondence concerned with "The Professor Jan Karski Scholarship Fund") can be sent c/o The American Center of Polish Culture 2025 O Street, N.W. Washington, DC 20036. Mr. Jonathan Starzyk, (202) 785-2320, <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, also of the above address, will be glad to answer your questions. "Get Well" wishes can also be e-mailed to Professor Karski through Mr. Starzyk's address. przekazala Izabela
