Tom, As far as Nagios monitoring, I use the NRPE/check_proc sensor to ensure the daemon is still running on our boxes. I also monitor my policyd table sizes for extra ordinary spikes, which I graph off (attached). Just a super simple php-cli script with some SELECTs.
