I'm using polipo for some years now. Mainly with Firefox, but also with everything that respects the http_proxy variable (Linux here, you didn't tell your OS). I am running the git version since 2010-02-11 and it never crashed (neither it did before migrating to git; the only problems I ever had where with big requests).
