These are errors reported by Tor; Polipo is only interpreting the
numeric codes and printing out a human-readable message.
The actual strings come from the SOCKS5 specification. As far as
I know, the "TTL expired" error is reported by Tor upon a timeout.

That's not a Polipo issue, it's a problem with Tor. The or-talk mailing
list might be more suitable.
