I really don’t understand why you think that the http server and proxy should be combined. They look like two very different things to me. If lighttpd (or thttpd, whose code base is much smaller and easier to hack on) suits your needs, use it as a webserver and avoid bloating polipo! Of course, the bugs you mention about polipo shall be solved too, but adding an full-fledged http server is likely to introduce even more bugs. Why not just fixing polipo, and choosing a separate http server?
