I have a meta-comment regarding your use of curl's test suite: It would be great if you can automate the running of curl's test suite (or a subset of it) through polipo so that it can be run with "make check" from the polipo source directory. Perhaps use an environment variable to specify the location of the curl source files (or an environment variable to specify a tag or URL of the curl source code to checkout into a temporary directory). An easy way to share that work would be to fork polipo on github and commit to a branch on your fork, then post the link here. I'd help out when I can (for example with diagnosing failing tests; I expect a lot of them will fail, but not always due to a fault of polipo's).
