I don't understand exactly why the "transparent proxy" approach or
interception is broken by design?

It did always work. I also wondered that re-routing http traffic to a proxy
port does work without the browser needing to know that it is communicating
with a proxy.

So switching some hosts between networks where sometimes a proxy is required
to access http through the firewall and sometimes not, I often only change
the rule in the router to forward 80 to some 3128 of the proxy. Therefore no
browser has to be reconfigured and no DHCP is required to inform about a
proxy or wpad file with proxy configuration.

What is the technical reason that it does not work with Polipo?
What is the reason to not support it?
At least Marcin Mazur has written on 02/07/09 how to make it work using
privoxy as "intercepting gate".

Best regards,
Massimo
