Hello,

usually I was using Firefox with a central proxy/web-cache, while adding
local site which the proxy does not know either to Firefox exception list
or, if using environment settings like $http_proxy, to $no_proxy.

Now I put Polipo as single-user "personal proxy" inbetween, actually to
replace the Firefox cache because Polipo has some more settings available,
more pipelining capabilities and I trust the performance of polipo more...

One issue is that I need to add some exceptions for parentProxy, that means
these exceptions are not forwarded to the parentProxy but requested
directly. Some hosts I can add to $no_proxy which means the clients (like
Firefox, but also others like curl etc.) are not even requesting the local
polipo for that. But some other hosts I like to be cached by Polipo but
still are not known to the outside proxy.

Actually I would go the lazy transparent proxy (intercepting) way like this:
I would not set parentProxy at all for Polipo, but forward all leaving
traffic for 80 (http) to some 3128 of the outside proxy. That always worked
the same as setting a proxy for all clients. That would give the opportunity
to add some exception rules for that transparent forwarding.

But anyway I'm on the way to understand why transparent proxying is a bad
approach and therefore asking if there is some exception setting for
parentProxy currently?

Best regards,
Massimo
