Yes, I seriously think there will be major and successful legal actions against the ringleaders of the Iraq War, the neoconservatives and their associated policies (including attacks on Iraqi civilians, torture, warrantless wiretaps, police state measures, assaults on the Constitution, etc.) Why is this so difficult to envision? Every messianic totalitarian regime, when it is at the peak of its power, is unable to see coming the powerful backlash that it has generated. History will judge that the Bush 43 administration has committed major crimes (including, possibly, its version of the Reichstag Fire with regard to 9/11).
We know how the neocons acquired control of Bush's "mind" -- Bush is a Christian Zionist. Christian Zionists are by definition brainwashed tools, zombies, robots, golems -- putty in the hands of Likud, Greater Israelists and Old Testament cultists. The entire Cheney clan (including Dick, Lynne and Liz) appear to have been ensnared by the neocons through a network of personal friendships. See #{Elizabeth Drew ON Dick Cheney AND neoconservatives IN The New York Review of Books}. Note especially Cheney's intimate ties to Kenneth "Cakewalk" Adelman. No one has ever accused Dick Cheney of being the brightest bulb on the chandelier -- he was easy pickings for the neocons, who are themselves not very bright. The neocons traditionally have preyed upon the weakest minds and worst mediocrities among members of the power elite outside the cult. It is also the case that Cheney's non-neocon cronies, including Halliburton, have profited handsomely from the Iraq War -- war profiteering played an important role in motivating the Iraq War. With regard to the Weekly Standard, John McCain, etc. -- the neocons have a long history of hating George H.W. Bush and his entire realist circle -- they view them as dangerous enemies of Israel and of "the Jews." Much of that hatred is now beginning to surface against Bush Junior, since he started to push the Mideast peace process and threaten the dreams of messianic Greater Israelists at One Jerusalem and other neocon redoubts. Keep in mind that neocon billionaires and oligarchs control the American mainstream media and can easily break any public figure in America -- including any president, and including any Bush from any generation. Neither over here in Europe nor in the US. Concerning the Nazi parallels - and I still feel there is a huge difference, beyond parallel structures - shouldn't Bush and Cheney be the first picks? Harold Bloom seems to think so too. But thanks for the pointer below. It's time I started to read Commentary over the times. I've noticed this by the way : The great mystery of George W. Bush's presidency is why he ever jumped into bed with neoconservatives in the first place. During the presidential primaries in 2000, The Weekly Standard, by then neoconservatism's pre-eminent publication, had preferred John McCain. ... What transformed Cheney from a mild skeptic about Iraq intervention when he was defense secretary in the early 1990s (one "former colleague" informs Heilbrunn that in those days Cheney was "not in thrall" to Wolfowitz) to the unappeasable hawk he revealed himself to be after 9/11?
