DAYTON, Ohio -- Democrat Barack Obama today called President Bush's
Iraq drawdown plan "very modest" and charged that Republican rival
John McCain would continue "the overwhelming focus on Iraq that has
taken our eye off of the terrorists who actually attacked us on 9/11."

Bush announced earlier today that the United States would begin
bringing home about 3,400 combat support forces -- including aviation
personnel, explosive ordinance teams, combat and construction
engineers, military police and logistical support forces. He also said
a Marine battalion in Anbar would come home by November with an Army
combat brigade to follow in February, and announced additional troops
for Afghanistan.

"His plan comes up short," Obama said, noting that the largest
withdrawal will take place in February, after Bush leaves office. "It
is not enough troops, and not enough resources, with not enough
urgency."

Obama faulted Bush and McCain for focusing on Iraq when "the central
front in the war on terror is not in Iraq and it never was." He called
for a rebuilt military and "a comprehensive strategy to finish the job
in Afghanistan."...
