THE FOLLOWING IS OFFICIAL DATA FROM ONE SMALL AREA OF ALASKA THAT IS
RELATIVELY PROSPEROUS. GIVEN THE COMPLEXITY OF LIVING IN TODAY'S
SOCIETY I CAN SEE WHERE PEOPLE WOULD GIVE UP AND DROP OUT. HOW MAY
PEOPLE ARE HOMELESS IN THE REST OF AMERICA. I WANT TO KNOW.
HOMELESS?
A. A recent AHFC survey indicated nearly 3,500 Alaskans are homeless
on any given night.
B. A additional 20,000 low income household send more than 50% of
their income on housing and costs, placing them at risk of
homelessness.
C. The ISER report indicates between 400 and 500 people are homeless
on the Kenai Peninsula.
D. The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District reports 256 of a
reported 390 homeless service recipients are children between the ages
of 1 and 16.
E. Why are they homeless? A 2001 study found 57% of Alaska households
could not afford a median priced home and 46% could not afford the
average rent.
F. Catastrophic events—a sudden financial downturn caused by illness,
injury, divorce or job loss—may push people into homelessness.
G. Who is homeless? In Alaska families with children are the largest
sector. Forty-five percent are persons in families with children and
are the target group.
