If anyone cares, I've always thought that Trent Lott was railroaded, and that there was a mini-coup in the GOP that allowed it to occur becuase somebody else wanted that position. The GOP was powerful enough at that time that they didn't have to roll over on Trent Lott. So (just my supposition here) there must have been a reason for the GOP to allow it to happen.
