Wednesday, 01 October 2008 A BOOK publisher who had his London home firebombed by Muslim extremists has put plans to publish a controversial book about the prophet Mohammed on ice, it was reported today. Martin Rynja has been in hiding since Saturday when anti-terrorism police arrested three men as they attempted to carry out an arson attack on his home in Islington. He was targeted after his company Gibson Square announced plans to publish The Jewel of Medina novel by Sherry Jones, which is about a young wife of Mohammed and has been described as "softcore pornography" by critics. According to reports in the US, Rynja is now considering whether to go forward with the publication, which is due next month. Alan Jessop, a sale representative for Gibson Square in the US, told the Bookseller website: "He is in good spirits, but has put publication in suspended animation while he reflects and takes advice on what the best foot forward is." Prior to the petrol bomb attack, Rynja, 44, defended his decision to publish the book, saying: "In an open society there has to be open access to literary works, regardless of fear. As an independent publishing company, we feel strongly that we should not be afraid of the consequences of debate". In 1989, there were mass protests worldwide following the publication of Salman Rushdie's novel "The Satanic Verses," because it allegedly insulted Islam.
