No, he was a great player who made a stupid mistake.
The greatest fighter pilot who ever lived was a German in WWII. Does
the fact that he was fighting for the German side and likely did harm
to the Allied cause make him less of a great fighter pilot?
I complimented Pete Rose as a skillful player of the game, did not say
what he did was right or healthy for the sport itself.
