BOCA RATON, FL -- On Northwest 6th Street, in the heart of Boca Raton, several show their support for John McCain. Miriam Pearson- Martinez is the only one on her street with a sign for Barack Obama in her front yard. Even in this beautiful neighborhood, something happened that she says, was just plain ugly. Thursday morning she found her sign supporting Obama had been burned and melted to her driveway.
“It reminded me of a cross burning in the front yard. Especially with an African American on the ticket.” Pearson-Martinez said. Liz Rockwell, who also lives in the neighborhood, having lived through an era of hate, had the same memories come flooding back when she saw the remnants of the sign. “It made me very sad. It made me very frightened, too. Shades of the 60’s,” she said. For Pearson-Martinez, the most difficult part was explaining to her 9- year-old son why someone would do something like this. She responded, by putting up a new Obama sign with a home-made sign underneath that reads, “You can burn my sign, but you won’t stop my vote.” She says she intends to fight back, without violence or destruction of others’ property. “I’m going to one, vote and then I’m going to get everyone else I know to vote and I don’t care who you vote for, as long as you vote. I’m going to keep my signs up in my front yard and even if I have to put them on my roof to keep them safe, I will,” she said. Boca Raton Police say this happens every year and they’ve had reports of Obama and McCain signs taken.
