A prototype home that sits along N Broadway St in Wichita has drawn the ire
of critics who say Home Depot has put self-promotion ahead of its cause.

WICHITA, Kan. (CAP) - Habitat for Humanity's Wichita chapter has announced
a new program aimed to help curb a growing problem in that city. Starting
this week, Habitat volunteers will begin building cardboard houses for the
city's homeless residents.

"You say refrigerator box, I say mobile studio apartment," said Wichita
Mayor Carl Brewer. "We're not just throwing boxes at the homeless, we're
throwing double-density corrugated cardboard houses at the homeless."

Habitat's newest effort is a joint venture with Home Depot, who not only
donated 27 intact cardboard boxes to help get the program off the ground,
but also offered three roofing specialists to help erect the structures.
Some homeless advocates are calling it "mission accomplished."

"I've never spent a single night on the street," said Jonas Reid of the
Kansas Statewide Homeless Coalition, "but I have stepped inside one of the
deluxe models. Talk about toasty! I think you'll be hard-pressed to find
any weather that can penetrate that baby."

An effort is also underway to lobby the US Postal Service to assign street
numbers to the houses so residents can receive their fair share of junk
mail, which officials believe will go a long way in making the boxes feel
like home.

Additionally, Habitat plans to follow Florida's lead and begin offering free
wireless internet to the
homeless<http://www.cap-news.com/story.php?id=200608009>as early as
next month.

"You know, we may watch them fight each other and post the videos on
YouTube just to help Google make more money from advertising," said Reid,
"but deep down, we know the homeless are people, too. Just a smelly
variety, is all."

U.S. cardboard manufacturers' sentiment was improved slightly on word of
the new program, with the NAHB/Wells Fargo Cardboard Housing Market index
up three points to 34. Trade associations says they are upbeat about
prospects for the first half of next year.
