Marijuana is not harmless. It can be a powerful drug. Though it is not physically addictive, there are plenty of people who are dependent on it. And it is certainly not for kids. This being said, it it far less harmful than most drugs. And it is clear that cannabis can be used to ease many ailments, some which are now treated primarily with opiate drugs with high potential for physical dependence and overdose. For some pot is a miracle. For some pharmaceutical companies pot is an expensive problem.
For many others it is simply a way to get loaded. More people want to get loaded smoking weed than need it to treat their rheumatoid arthritis. Pot is by far the most popular illicit drug. This despite being bulky and odoriferous and so relatively easy to detect.
Because cannabis is easy to detect, and so popular, many within law enforcement would like to see it remain illegal. By no means all of law enforcement is for continued prohibition. There are more and more cops coming out for legalization every day. Still, busting pot heads means job security and times are tough.
