*Michelle Obama demonstrates proper arm exercise technique. *
*Number of reps is determined by the amount of lobster on the table.*

Sometimes you just gotta wonder what on earth Democrats are thinking, if
they are:

First lady Michelle Obama says her "Let's Move" initiative is not about
physical appearance.

She introduced the program in 2010 in an effort to help reduce the rate of
childhood obesity.

"This campaign isn't about how kids look. It's about how kids feel," Obama
said in an interview that aired Friday on NBC's "Today" show. "And we want
our kids to feel, inside, the best that they can feel so that they become
all that they were meant to be."

Not that childhood obesity isn't a serious problem, or that all the indoor
entertainment that young kids have today isn't contributing to sedentary
habits, but any initiative that seeks to reduce the rate of childhood
obesity, hate to say it, is at least partially about looks. We have a
thing for image in this country and, well...a huge percentage of Americans
are fat.

There it is.

But that is not the only place "Let's Move" as a messaging vehicle fails -
and not just for Moochelle, but the big government nanny staters who came
up with it in the first place.

*Being a lawyer and not being really interested in the job of First Lady,
it's doubtful she thought up "Let's Move" on her own. I still maintain
that all this messaging is controlled by a larger group that has given up
honest market testing. Seriously, this is their idea of a Focus Group
<http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KICLApm_ANE>. *

Whoever at Democratic Party headquarters - or their handlers - thought
having the Lobster Queen (talk about a food that's bad for you) be the
spokesperson for a "Let's Move" campaign really, seriously did not think
things through. A spokesperson needs to lead by example. Moochelle
certainly does not when it comes to eating right and exercising.

Have we ever seen a non photo-op video of Moochie really playing any sport,
walking, running, swimming, biking? Anything that would raise her heart
rate? Even walking the stairs in the White House? Sweatin' to the Oldies
with Richard Simmons or anyone else for longer than five minutes? Pilates?
No, we get videos of Barack and Uncle Joe running through the West Wing in
a bad imitation of some classic 70's superhero shows. (Watch
this<http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XBr1xb0AF8>to learn how to get
Michelle's arms. Note that she is not in the video.
Also note that Michelle's arms have no muscle definition in the triceps.)
(There are plenty of videos out there touting Michelle's fitness fetish,
but other than push-ups, her form is terrible.)

The new federal guidelines for lunches in public school meals - sometimes
the only meals inner city kids get for other big government reasons - are
supposedly "healthy" (for adults. Maybe) but don't have enough calories
for growing children or athletes to function. Reports from coast to coast
are that kids get home from school and they eat like it's going out of
style. (That, plain and simply, is not good or economical for anyone.)
And yet, Moochelle eats lobster, one of the ocean's great cockroach
crustaceans, that eat trash and waste off the ocean floor.

The nanny state labeling of soda, junk foods, and the like...the people who
need to read the labels don't read the ones that are on the "food" now.
What makes the regime think that additional warnings on high fructose corn
syrup, MSG, soy, etc., are going to be heeded if a person has no
self-interest in not eating any of the problem ingredients.

*The government's place should be to tell the food manufacturers to cease
producing unhealthy "foods" not warning the public after the product is
available. However, as those corporations get federal subsidies, that's
not all that likely to happen.*

Who, exactly, thought this was a good idea? It's not like there aren't
better examples of like messaging available for study.

There is a private, although Democratic in nature, organization out there
called Share Our Strength that in some ways seeks to do the same thing as
"Let's Move" by teaching adults, teens, and kids to prepare "healthy" meals
on a budget. (Using fruits and veggies and lean meats is great, but the
low-fat craze has run its course since research now shows that we need
good, natural fats in our diets and to get rid of the seed oils. Their
curriculum and recipes need to be revised.) One of the goals of this
organization is to reduce obesity. Great, although how well this transfers
from classroom to home is another story. There is a class each session
dedicated to reading food labels. Even better, because processed foods are
loaded with refined sugars and salts, which are increasingly looking like
some of the main culprits in the obesity issue.

This is not a government program. It is a private one. If only there were
more of them.

*The secret to healthy eating is to shop on the perimeter of the store.
Convenience food manufacturers spend billions every year to be sure all of
us forget that. Educated people, who have been following this story and
know how to cook, know this. That is NOT the entire population by a long
shot. And that is a problem so long as people are unengaged. Somewhere
along the line, dumbing down the population included hooking consumers on
TV dinners and their cousins cereal, frozen fried chicken, fries and more
rather than actually cooking. It's really not that hard to make things
from scratch, but when there's a boxed mix with simple and dumbed down
directions, and a person feels like they are cooking.... I mean, there's
pots and pans involved.*

When it comes down to it, if done right and well, the "Let's Move"
initiative as a public service kind of campaign actually really is needed
albeit without the enshrining of poorly thought out laws and labeling and a
spokesperson who is not on record actually doing any of the things espoused
in the messaging. (Bill Clinton and George W. Bush may have disrupted
traffic running, but at least they were really exercising, not just playing
golf.) American diets are poor and we could spend more time incorporating
body movement in our days. We really could. But the leader of the
movement needs to inspire that, not be an absentee landlord and not take
responsibility when the program tactics end up being more a disaster than
viable solutions.

And that leader needs to be honest when discussing body image. Because if
we all really didn't care about body image, we'd eat junk food and play
video games all day long.

*BTW, it is possible to find soda with cane sugar rather than high fructose
corn syrup in some stores. The major brands are all from Mexico, and it's
more expensive, but it tastes much better and there is no craving for more.*
