Doyle McManus of the *LA Times* outlines the Democratic messaging to single
women this year:
Democratic campaign rhetoric this year bristles with female-friendly ideas.
The party hasn't merely reprised its long-standing endorsement of abortion
rights; it's also calling for pay equity for women, stronger protections
for pregnant women in the workforce, broader paid sick leave and family
leave measures, and universal early childhood education.
*Okaaayyy...but protections for pregnant women and universal early
childhood education are not really single women issues. Single MOTHER
issues, but there are a lot of us single women who aren't mothers and more
than likely won't be. We should not be lumped together*.
Aside from being patronizing and sexist as all get out since men's issues
are not addressed, uh, how is using the same old, same old going to woo
single women with no need for the services described? The Democrats have
been promising the same thing since before Bill Clinton's first
administration. If it hasn't been achieved by now - not even in the two
years they had complete control of the federal legislative and executive
branches - why should any woman believe it is going to happen?
Besides, in a midterm election, Democrats are going to need more than just
single women to keep the Senate, which seems to be the goal:
In midterm congressional elections, unlike presidential elections, winners
are more likely to be determined by which voters turn out than by which
party is more popular. In the 2008 presidential
election<http://www.latimes.com/topic/politics/u.s.-presidential-election-%282008%29-EVHST0000104.topic>,
about 131 million people voted; in the 2010 congressional election, only 95
million voted -- a drop-off of 36 million, or about 27%.
That drop-off meant the difference between a Democratic victory (in 2008)
and a Republican triumph (in 2010). The voters who didn't show up, as is
often the case in a congressional election year, were disproportionately
Democratic, including millions of young people, minority voters and
unmarried women.
Democrats are particularly targeting unmarried women (including single
mothers) because they are the largest contingent, accounting for more than
10 million "drop-off voters," according to Lake. They're easier to find and
to mobilize than young voters, she said. And they're important in every
state; minority voters "aren't going to help much in Alaska or Montana,"
she notes.
The strategy isn't about persuading swing voters in the center to move;
it's about convincing Democratic-leaning women who may be disappointed with
the president, the economy and the healthcare plan that they should take
the trouble to vote, even as they juggle jobs and child care.
So, Democrats are crafting their messaging based on low information voters
who probably aren't paying attention because the office of president is not
an issue. AND they seem to think that "Democratic-leaning" women will vote
that way despite being "disappointed with the president, the economy and
the healthcare plan" because the Dems are concentrating their messaging on
issues that appeal to true blue Democrats, not the swing voter.
*Seriously, the left messaging machine is stuck in the past if they think
that women consider access to abortion to still be a campaign issue.
Haven't they noticed that the tide has turned toward the pro-life side?*
Single women may well be the largest group that tends not to show up in a
non-presidential year, but how does targeting us train the young people to
get in the habit of voting in the midterms? Even the knuckledragging TEA
Party figured out that the midterms are just as important as the
presidential years.
Have all the Democratic deep thinkers gone to the Hillary for President
team?
2014 is a VITALLY important midterm election year for the survival of the
republic, and yes, control of the Senate hangs in the balance. Based on
the messaging to the voters the Democrats need to pick up to win, it looks
like the blue big boys may well be willing to lose this one and concentrate
on the big prize in 2016.
