Some Syrians have a message for Ukrainians waiting for help from the U.S.
and the West as the crisis in Ukraine deepens: Don't get your hopes up.
As the Syrian civil war enters its third year this month with no end in
sight, many in the opposition see a long string of broken promises from the
US and an international community that voiced support for their fight to
overthrow Russia-backed president, Bashar al-Assad. Now, Russia is sending
its forces into Ukraine. While Barack Obama and other Western leaders have
been quick to condemn the Russian aggression, words are cheap, according to
the Syrians:
*"Do not develop strategies that are based on any assumption that the U.S.
or EU will demonstrate assertive leadership to deter Russian aggression."*
Abdullah Ismail, a rebel coordinator based on the Turkish border, told
BuzzFeed<http://www.buzzfeed.com/mikegiglio/disappointed-syrians-warn-ukrainians-off-seeking-us-help>

*"Make sure that you achieve whatever you're aiming for with your own
hands. That's the only way to avoid relying on promises."*
Many Syrians were deeply disappointed when Obama failed to enforce his now
infamous "red line" against the Assad regime for its use of chemical
weapons -- opting instead to allow Russia's Vladimir Putin to negotiate a
deal requiring the Assad regime to give up its stockpile of chemical
weapons. Syria missed yet another deadline last month for destroying the
weapons; to date, *only

its chemical arsenal has been handed over for destruction.
And now, it's the Ukrainians turn. While I'm not suggesting -- nor will I
ever -- that the US should commit military forces to defend Ukraine
(although it signed a
*treaty*<http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2570335/Former-British-Ambassador-Moscow-warns-Russia-invaded-Ukraine-difficult-avoid-going-war.html>in
1994 to do so), I am saying that the pledges, promises -- and yes,
threats -- of Barack Obama often ring hollow. All one need do is look back
at his promises to the American people; never mind the Syrians.
