All is not lost though:
Chipotle spokesman Chris Arnold reached out to msnbc.com on Wednesday to
downplay the report.
"The sky is not falling. This is routine and required financial disclosure.
We've seen similar conditions in the past - and incurred higher prices
because of it - but have never stopped serving our guacamole," he wrote in
an email. "It's ultimately much ado about nothing."

Of course, what does Think Progress, MSNBC, and a whole host of other
leftist sort of media outlets blame the effects of a nasty drought on? You
got it: "climate change":
But the California avocado industry is changing due to climate change. The
devastating drought has produced the tiniest crop of egg-sized avocados
most growers have ever seen, though on the bright side the crop did produce
more of the tinier fruit, according to NPR.

Drought does that for farmers. A couple summers ago, when we had one of
the worst droughts on record out here in flyover country, fruit trees
produced small, very flavorful fruit, and not a lot of it. That's just the
way of things. In California, back when man was still at the top of the
priority list, irrigation systems were put into place to help farmers -
including avocado growers - when drought conditions came into play. This
is what happens when that order of things is disrupted.
But that is only part of Chipotle's problem, if there really is one:
Chipotle attempts to use <http://www.chipotle.com/en-US/fwi/fwi.aspx> only
organic and sustainably farmed ingredients grown within 350 miles of each
restaurant, so it's particularly susceptible to these changes. Sustainable
meat markets "are generally smaller and more concentrated than the markets
for commodity food products," the report notes.
Many of us are all for the "locally grown" craze happening right now, but
at a certain point, one has to be able to stay in business. Chipotle can
always start buying them like the rest of us do, from Mexico:
Nearly half of all internationally traded avocados are from Mexico (table
2). It came to nearly 500,000 tonnes valued at 0.9 billion dollars in 2012.
Export increases every year, but the increase from 2010 to 2011 was very
substantial. Three quarters of Mexican export is directed at their northern
neighbour, the USA. Last year, 370,000 tonnes of Mexican produce went
across their northern border. Japan bought a lot more Mexican avocados last
year than previously: 50,000 tonnes. Canada is their third largest
customer. Mexico exports about 30% of its production (table 3).

It's not like avocadoes are going to be extinct due to a drought in
California. Chipotle may have to deign to buy something other than organic
and sustainable fruit to stay in business. They only use 97,000 pounds of
avocadoes a day (6.3 million a year). Mexico sends the US 740 million
pounds every year. There's plenty for their guac.
As always with the Climate Change is Settled Science crowd, it's been an
education on how the headlines only tell half the story.
Now if Think Progress can just tell us how Chipotle buys locally grown,
organic avocadoes out here in flyover country where the growing season is
too short for avocado trees without a bit of actual Global Warming, we'd
have a story.
