It seemed to be a bit of a shock to the nation this week when Soopermexican
over at *Independent Journal
Review*<http://www.ijreview.com/2014/04/126263-think-theres-no-voter-fraud-dead-voters-in-nc/>,
among others, shared that tens of thousands of registered voters in North
Carolina matched names, birthdates and social security numbers to voters in
other states and that at least 81 dead people seemed to have voted in the
2012 election.

Of course this comes on the heels of a couple other revelations of voter
fraud, in

which were reported in the conservative blogosphere, but not many other
places. In fact, the entire concept has been treated somewhat like a witch
hunt by the mainstream media and leftists in general.
Digging into the North Carolina story a little, one finds out that this
investigation of voter fraud actually started in 2012 when a group called
Voter Integrity Project of North Carolina delivered to the state election
commission a list of dead people still on the voter

A group of citizen volunteers conducted an audit of the voter rolls that
the state didn't do, or even initiate, on it's own.
Huh.
It seems that this is happening all over the country. After doing an
internet search for "Voter Integrity Project" there are entries of groups
with this or similar names in states such as California, Ohio, Florida,
Montana, Indiana, Tennessee and Illinois working to audit voter rolls
throughout our 50 states and basically clean them up.
*It appears that this is an outgrowth of an initiative of Judicial Watch,
<http://www.judicialwatch.org/election-integrity/> a twenty year old,
conservative watchdog group that includes in its mission statement that no
one is above the law. Judicial Watch announced just such an initiative at
CPAC in 2012 <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kpi5CgOHqh4#aid=P6R5uG57CKA>,
and it may well be that it is taking years to bring the task to fruition.*
While it is admirable that a non-profit watchdog group has taken on this
gargantuan venture to ensure election integrity, they shouldn't have had
to. This is really a task for state governments and some form of
cooperative agreement between them.
Through all the reporting, it seems that election fraud comes down to a
handful of issues:
- Lack of automatic purging of the dead from voter rolls
- Lack of cross-checking voter rolls with jury excusals that say "non
citizen" as an excuse (how such people ended up in the jury pool is another
matter)
- Lack of citizens reporting to their local election boards that they
have moved
- Lack of checking from election boards with each other on who has newly
registered to vote after moving from a different state
- Lack of required voter identification laws or enforcement
All this boils down to lack of interest from state governments to ensure
honest elections.
The Achilles Heel in the American voter system - and thus the integrity -
is that due to elections technically being entrusted to the states, there
are 50 different ways of registering and tracking voters. Each state has
its own prerogative. That is the way the system was set up and given the
current political climate in the country, there will be no changing that
anytime soon.
However, it is in the nation's best interest to find some way for the
states to come together and agree to track the same information on all
registered voters, have some sort of database cross check annually not run
by any group or company connected to George Soros, and clean up the voter
rolls whether Eric Holder likes it or not.
Voter ID laws aside, without purging the list of people eligible to vote in
the first place, the prospect of voter fraud is very real. After all,
those are the very votes that end up being fraudulent.
This is why the states matter. With all the talk of who should run for
national office or be a representative at the federal level, the need for
strong and honest people in state governments gets lost. Not only for
state business, but interstate business like election integrity that the
United States seems to be lacking at this time.
