“Rand Paul vs. the money men”
By Nick Sorrentino

Rand Paul will face massive opposition from the establishment, pro-military complex wing of the Republican Party in his presumed bid for the White House. People with big check books are ready to fund Paul’s opposition. The neocons don’t think Paul is “strong enough” on Israel. They want to make sure the $3 billion currently flowing to the country from US taxpayers keeps flowing. Much of the political class in Tel Aviv counts on this infusion in one way or another. Anyone (Paul possibly) who would even consider reducing the annual gift is considered an existential threat.

What’s particularly interesting to me is how concerned many of the neocons are with the junior Senator form Kentucky. I think they sense that he is a new kind of candidate who will appeal to coalitions and voters who are not traditionally aligned with the GOP. In other words – that he could win. If Paul were to win the nomination and the presidency this screws up the playbooks big time for the GOP establishment. The neocons will find themselves out in the cold, banished by a party which has left them behind.

Though I think Paul is politically adept enough to throw a couple of bones to the neocons if he were to win, and that he wouldn’t rub their noses in a loss, Paul none-the-less will have won without the blessing of very powerful interests. And that scares these powerful interests a lot.

(From The Week)
Hawkish Republicans and hawkish Republican donors considered Ron Paul a nuisance, though occasionally a useful and amusing one. Rand Paul, on the other hand, is a real political talent. He is less stiffly ideological than his father. He more easily translates his libertarian instincts into words the GOP base understands.
And that means that Paul the son is a threat to the hawkish wing of the GOP. If it looks like he could win more than a few primaries in 2016, chances are he’ll face a tidal wave of money from neocon donors opposing him.
