*It’s estimated that over 80 percent of the folks who are here on an
undocumented basis have been here 10 years or longer. These are folks who
are woven into the fabrics of our communities. Their kids are going to
school with our kids. Most of them are not making trouble; most of them
are not causing crimes.*
*And yet, we put them in this tenuous position and it creates a situation
in which your personnel, who have got to go after gang-bangers and need to
be going after violent criminals and deal with the whole range of
challenges, and who have to cooperate with DHS around our counterterrorism
activities — you’ve got to spend time dealing withsomebody who is not
causing any other trouble other than the fact that they were trying to make
a living for their families. That’s just not a good use of our resources.
It’s not smart*. It doesn’t make sense.”
Not to argue with the executive orders king, but regardless of how long
people have been here illegally, or how little trouble they are causing or
how great citizens they would be if the process was less expensive and
cumbersome (which should be on the table for discussion if we could shelve
the concept of blanket amnesty) they are still on the wrong side of
American law and as such when found, the people should be dealt with
according to how the law reads.
*The problem is catching them. Each ethnic group that has not quite
assimilated has their own methods of keeping illegals out of the hands of
INS. And for citizen observers who suspect it is happening near them, the
bigger problem is proving it.*
Barack Obama may not have been living in the country when it was tried, but
not even thirty years ago, blanket amnesty was applied here in the United
States somewhat to deal with exactly the same sort of issue, and the result
was the birth of a lot of black market forgery operations that used up even
more resources trying to find the forgers as the newly minted American
citizens and residents did not want to have to wait for official papers,
but still wanted benefits. Then there were the millions who did not bother
to even register.
Any sort of amnesty is declared and we are inviting the same sort of
trouble.
Unfortunately, as much as immigration in general, and smoothing the path to
citizenship for people who would be great Americans needs to be addressed
and improved, the topic has become politicized to the point of being a tar
baby. A pretty nasty tar baby. Anyone who wants to have an honest
discussion is, well, SOL. Hands will get stuck in the muck.
Don't look for that situation to improve any time soon.
