Amid concern from Arab-American groups, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern
District of Michigan is praising Dearborn in response to a report this week
that said government documents list the city as the No. 2 center nationwide
for terrorists in the U.S.

“It is unfortunate that recent reports have suggested a
negative perception about an entire community,†U.S. Attorney
Barbara McQuade told the Free Press. “I can assure the public
that Dearborn is filled with great American patriots — U.S.
service members, police officers, teachers, lawyers, doctors,
business people, laborers and good neighbors.â€

On Tuesday, the Intercept published a report about the expansion in recent
years of a list of terrorists or suspected terrorists compiled by the
National Counterterrorism Center. The report said the list rapidly grew
after the underwear bomber, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, attempted to blow up
a plane over metro Detroit on Dec. 25, 2009.

The report cited government documents that listed Dearborn, with a
population of about 97,000, as having the second-highest number of
terrorists, or those tied to terrorists, among all cities in the U.S.
New York City was ranked first, Houston third, San Diego fourth and Chicago
fifth.

Given Dearborn’s relatively small population compared to the other cities
on the list, the fact that the city is ranked second concerned local
Arab-Americans. The city is about 40% Arab American, the highest percentage
among cities in the U.S., according to the U.S. Census.

The head of the Michigan chapter of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination
Committee, Fatina Abdraboh, said she’s worried the labeling could
“increase the hostility toward the Arab-American community.†She and
others, including McQuade, stood on the steps of Dearborn City Hall on
Friday morning to express support for the Dearborn community and disgust
toward the reported documents.

Hazem Bata, executive director and CEO with the Islamic Society of North
America, said people were scared of Arab-Americans after the Sept. 11
attacks, “but the time has come for us to come back to our senses.â€

He said he and his colleagues are “very disturbed†by the
reported documents, especially because many people in Dearborn have helped
the federal government with investigations.

The Intercept report said that about 680,000 are on the list of known
terrorists or suspected terrorists. It also said there are now about 47,000
on a no-fly list, another issue that has concerned Arab-Americans who
travel on airplanes.

McQuade said “efforts are under way to revise the existing
redress process regarding the No Fly List.â€

The Intercept is an online magazine started by, among others, Glenn
Greenwald, who was a primary recipient of Edward Snowden's leaks of
National Security Agency documents. The publication focuses on reports
related to the leaks and a broader mission of producing “fearless,
adversarial journalism across a wide range of issues,†according to its
website on https://firstlook.org.
