The final thought of this piece is that the language of the Cold War has no
meaning for the people who did not live it. That may be true, but the
statements of the millennials themselves demonstrate that no one taught
them what exactly socialism, or complete government control, really means.
They seem to vote with their hearts not their heads. And they don't quite
get the concept that government money is really theirs. And anyone over
thirty understands that they haven't lived enough life to truly get why
social traditions are the norm.
Social issues aside, that's a big problem. Emily Ekins, the Reason
Foundation Director of Polling, is exactly correct: the language used to
communicate with millennials must be specific and updated. The teminology
of twentieth century conflicts and politics means nothing to them. As
unbecoming as it is, everything must be couched in self-interest language
in order to make an impact.
One positive note according to this: millennials are more fiscally
"conservative". If that means that they are willing to scrutinize public
spending and help make that more efficient once they get over normal coming
of age rebellion and the idea that defense isn't necessary, there might be
hope yet.
