Subject: Editorial Praise of Buckley Senate Campaign
To:

Great news to share!

We just learned that several major newspapers in West Virginia, led by the
flagship *Wheeling Intelligencer*, ran a prominent editorial on Sunday
heaping praise on the ideas advanced in our campaign (I say "our" because I
count you as a vital part of this joint effort). The editorial is about the
Buckley campaign, what we stand for, and how our libertarian political
philosophy is consistent with the vision of the Founding Fathers of this
country.

The headline of the editorial in the *Intelligencer* is, "Libertarian Ideas
Merit Discussion." See below (from link via WV Press Association).

In the Martinsburg *Journal News*, the editorial was headlined,
"All-Important: Individual liberties must always be kept in mind."

The *Inter-Mountain*, based in Elkins, led with, "Libertarian Candidates
Gaining Traction."

Oh sure, when you read the article in full, you'll notice it begins with
the proposition that I (and the other two small-party candidates) "have no
chance of prevailing." Certainly at this point, it's fair to observe that
I'm about $15 million short of competing financially with Capito and
Tennant for victory. Of course, Tennant has no chance of winning either.

The editorial continues, however, with an implicit recognition that my
Senate campaign has brought invaluable substance to the political debate:
"But much of what Buckley, of Hardy County, has to say should be appealing
to West Virginians who believe government has become too intrusive, too
controlling and too expensive. The same can be said about other Libertarian
candidates elsewhere in the nation."

This is a hugely significant acknowledgement that WE ARE RIGHT in pointing
out the dangers of Big Government.

In concluding, the editorial makes a subliminal point, but I think (I'm
biased, of course) *it is actually the whole point of this extraordinary
editorial* (by a chain of newspapers that have already endorsed the
Republican candidate): "Again, Capito is expected to win the Senate seat by
a large margin. Knowledge of her lead may prompt some voters to *cast
ballots for Buckley*" (my emphasis) (why do I think this is the unstated
message? Let's just say that I had a wonderful, extended conversation with
the owner of the papers after I was the featured speaker at a lunch meeting
in Wheeling last Tuesday).

In other words, 1) Capito is going to win (they believe); 2) there's no
likelihood that votes for John Buckley at this point would swing the
election to Tennant; and 3) of most significance, votes for Buckley would
advance the cause of "freedom and prosperity." The reasonable conclusion: *it's
OK to vote for Buckley*. That's the message. So, spread the word!

When we advance the message of small government and individual liberty, we
win. This campaign, thanks to your support, has already proven a success.
But let's garner some more votes between now and election day to underscore
our achievement!

With thanks to everyone,

John
