Good Morning,
I write this only here in the Morning Briefing and not at RedState today.
There are days I feel like the Roman servant forced to whisper in the
General's ear, "Respice post te! Hominem te esse memento! Memento mori!",
which is translated "Look behind you! Remember that you are a man! Remember
that you'll die!"
My first two posts this morning are not meant to rain on the parade. We are
all happy by last Tuesday. But permanent majorities are never permanent and
there are still issues that must be addressed. I hope you take both in that
spirit.
Memento mori!

We
are a week removed from the “drubbing,” as the media chose to call what
happened. The elation of conservatives is well deserved. I’ve noticed a
sense of optimism coming from a lot of my politically connected evangelical
friends who seem to think we have gotten a reprieve.
I encourage the sense of optimism, but also must caution two things.
First, conservatives have descended into progressive level anger in the
past six years. It was always the left who politicized everything and
anything and all things together. What you wore, drove, ate and where you
shopped, ate, and played were all political statements. The right has been
doing that more and more of late and fostering an unhealthy sense of
grievance.
There are certainly things to be upset about or be angry about in politics,
but life is just too short to be in a constant state of hair on fire rage.
The left won the White House, Senate, and House of Representatives in 2008
and their anger grew despite their victories. We on the right should, I
hope, embrace the optimism. Evangelicals should embrace that they’re just
passing through headed home to a victory assured.
We should all be happy.
That leads to the second caution.
Among my evangelical friends embedded in politics, many sense a reprieve.
Don’t. Read More

*Don’t Let Victory Cover Over Weakness*

The
Democrats, in defeat, have one advantage the defeated always have — they
get a more clear eyed assessment of defeat than winners get through the
glassy eyes of celebration. We on the right are all still giddy from
defeating Barack Obama and the Democrats last Tuesday. And yes, Democrats,
it was a defeat for the President. But in the giddiness, we should not fail
to grasp that there are still problems. Read More

*If I Were Complicit with Mass Murder, I’d Want to Rewrite
History, Too*
<http://click1.redstatemail.com/ddcktbnrkkdftrkrfrthnflmmjfmmrjnsshbwtdsrdgdhp_atsmsmskppk.html>
As we commemorate the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall,
one of the momentous events of the last century, the left continues its
transparent and embarrassing attempt to rewrite their complicity with
communist totalitarianism out of history, and attempting to erase Ronald
Reagan’s role in its defeat. The latest attempt, by the New York Times, not
only seeks to erase Reagan’s credit but also to lay the blame for the most
recent Iraq misadventure at his feet. The new party line on the fall of the
Berlin Wall seems to be that the wall fell as the result of a sort of
comedy of errors on the part of the East German government – which,
everyone has long understood that the government fumbled its way into a
mess it could not get out of. However, this reductionist view completely
ignores the fact that a similar chain of events would not have caused the
wall to come down at any point in the 20 years prior, as the East Germans
would have been able to contain the problem with ease. As Ken White noted
on twitter, “Saying that the Berlin Wall fell due to a clerical error is
like saying the kingdom fell for want of a nail. The kingdom fell because
it was ROTTEN.” Definitely, some of the reasons for the rot were internal,
but ignoring the role Reagan played in advancing the rot is a delusional
fool’s game. Read More

*The Great (and Deliberate) “Typo” Lie*
<http://click1.redstatemail.com/ddpktbnrkkdftrkrfrthnflmmjfmmrjnsshbwtdsrdgdhc_atsmsmskppk.html>
Now
that the Supreme Court has agreed to hear the King v. Burwell challenge to
the Federal subsidies in Obamacare, the defenders of the law are busy once
again trying to trot the deliberate and intentional lie that the provision
in Obamacare that limits the subsidies to those who are on “State”
exchanges is a “typo” and that clearly Congress meant to include all
exchange customers in the subsidies provision. Paul Krugman, who is even
worse at being a lawyer than he is at being an economist, trotted out a
representative sample of this patent dishonesty yesterday in the New York
Times.
The first and only necessary rejoinder to this attack, at least from a
legal standpoint, is, “So what?” It is not the job of the courts to fix
Congress’ screw ups. If Congress screwed up a law and wrote it to say
exactly the opposite of what they meant, a court does not have leeway to
just rewrite the law accordingly. Fortunately for such an unfortunate
Congress, there is a perfectly acceptable way for them to fix their
“typos,” if they are in fact typos, which is that they can go back and
amend the law through the normal legislative process. Read More

*Hold it: Snopes isn’t convinced on this Gruber thing.*

I
can tell you a little about Snopes’ latest attempt to try and fit in with
the Cool Online Left Crowd. This piece that went up today says that there
are elements of truth and fiction in the Jonathan Gruber video that went
viral today. So viral, in fact, that all the big talk show hosts were
discussing it, and both Fox News and Jake Tapper ran stories on it.
However, that isn’t enough for Noted Conspiracy Debunkers, Snopes.com

From denial, wherein Democrats swept out of office have decided to keep

We have liberal writers positing Pelican Brief scenarios of dead Supreme
Court Justices causing 4-4 preservations of Obamacare to others claiming
the GOP wants to kill people. Read More
