I recently stumbled across the following article at Chron.com and you'll
have to tell me what you think of it. You simply can’t make this stuff up.
Now men have been basically using the world as their urinal from a standing
position for thousands of years and I have enjoyed contributing to that
long-standing tradition on more than one occasion. I have to say that
despite the feelings of our culturally all-but-neutered European brethren
the rest of us are not interested in being forced to squat if we don’t have
to.

You may not know it, but your urine is an environmental menace.
Although it comprises only about 1 percent of waste water in sewage
systems, urine contributes some 80 percent of nitrogen and 45 percent of
phosphate. Removing these impurities during the process of converting
sewage water into clean weather requires energy intensive pumping,
stirring, heating and so forth.
So what’s a solution? Here’s the *No-Mix Toilet <http://nomixtoilets.com/>*.

This toilet separates urine and poo-poo at the source. The nutrients in
urine can be then recycled for such purposes as fertilizer. And the other
sewage can then be transported to waste treatment facilities where actually
can be used to produce power rather than consume it.
The problem is that some people might not like the new toilet. For men it
means sitting down, not standing. (On the upside, gone would be the
long-standing gripe of women about the toilet seat being left up.) And
apparently the toilets are more prone to blockages.
Nevertheless, scientists are reporting that Europeans seem amenable to the
new toilets.
A new survey reported in *Environmental & Science Technology* (*see
research article
<http://pubs.acs.org/stoken/presspac/presspac/full/10.1021/es9028765>*)
finds that, in seven northern and central European countries, 80 percent of
users liked the idea, and 75 to 85 percent were satisfied with design,
hygiene, smell, and seating comfort of No-Mix toilets.
I wonder whether the idea will sink or swim in America.
Now there are those who think that the under-feminized American male is the
source of all evil in the world and should perhaps be forced to be
de-masculinized by peeing sitting down. Perhaps such an inconvenience would
slow the rising of the oceans, save the polar bears, reverse global
warming, and somehow make us less warlike in our relations with others. But
I highly doubt it. I’m still mad about the low-flow toilet and the
outlawing of regular non-mercury bomb light bulbs so I don’t think I’ll be
putting one of these to good use anytime soon.
In a world where a majority of the population is drowning in sewage,
polluted water, and lacks even the most basic infrastructure for sewage
disposal or treatment facilities I think having traditional indoor plumbing
is the least of the problems facing mankind. In fact, I am willing to
venture that far more water is wasted and polluted by the lack of modern
sewage facilities than by some male urine that ends up in an actual modern
sewage treatment facility.
The time, energy, and tremendous amount of money that would be needed to
retrofit every conventional flushing toilet would be far better spent
helping install some basic sewage disposal units throughout the Third World
than worrying about the current urine disposal practices in the First World.
