The call was made in a resolution passed Thursday by the standing committee of the Conference of European Rabbis, or CER, which convened this week in Tbilisi, Georgia. “We call on additional countries to follow the example set by France and Germany, and *devise legislation that targets hate speech against Jews specifically*,” CER President Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt told JTA Friday. “It is something that few countries have but is necessary in light of the rise in anti-Semitic violence and hate speech, as we have witnessed this summer,” Goldschmidt said in reference to a surge in anti-Semitic expressions throughout Western Europe that coincided with Israel’s war in Gaza. The government of prime minister Tony Abbott made it an election promise last year to remove key sections of the Racial Discrimination Act that it says make it illegal to “hurt the feelings of others”, while adding new provisions it says will boost protection against racism. The Government’s approach has been welcomed by conservatives and the free market think tank the Institute of Public Affairs. The Government wants to repeal four sections of the Act, <http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-03-24/brandis-defends-right-to-be-a-bigot/5341552> including 18C, which makes it unlawful for someone to publicly “offend, insult, humiliate or intimidate” a person or a group of people. “It is not, in the Government’s view, the role of the State to ban conduct merely because it might hurt the feelings of others,” Attorney-General George Brandis said when the law change was introduced. The Government wants to retain as an offence any action that would “intimidate another person” and create a new clause making it illegal to “vilify another person” on the basis of “race, colour or national or ethnic origin”. “To intimidate a person is to cause them to be fearful,” Senator Brandis explained. “That is an entirely different state of mind, it is an entirely different concept.” Tony Abbott said Australia’s democracy and freedom depended on free speech. “Of course this Government is determined to try to ensure that Australia remains a free and fair and tolerant society, where bigotry and racism has no place,” Mr Abbott said. “But we also want this country to be a nation where freedom of speech is enjoyed.” The reaction in the Jewish media on the other hand, reveals precisely how deeply the jews hate freedom of speech.
