*New social media company wants to protect user data and free speech* Posted on June 17, 2015June 17, 2015 <http://personalliberty.com/new-social-media-company-wants-to-protect-user-data-and-free-speech/> by Sam Rolley <http://personalliberty.com/author/samrolleypl/>
A new social media company is seeking to capitalize on privacy concerns surrounding traditional platforms like Facebook by offering users encrypted messaging and other privacy protections along with familiar social networking features. The new company, Minds.com <https://www.minds.com/>, says on its website that it will give users the power to control their social reach, a transition from the complicated and ever changing algorithms used by Facebook to decide how prominently a given post or user should appear on news feeds. “For every mobile vote, comment, remind, swipe and upload you earn points which can be exchanged for views on posts of your choice. It’s a new web paradigm that gives everyone a voice,” the company explains. The Minds.com strategy could win the favor of publishing companies and social media marketers who have had content obscured from their audiences since Facebook changed its News Feed algorithm to limit the number of fans posts reach. As one CNET article explained: “The difference between Minds and the social media giants is that some of the giants keep a user’s own followers from seeing his or her posts unless the user pays up for a promoted post. Minds hopes this unfettered access to followers will attract people who want to promote their work — be it a makeup tutorial or a blog post on current events — but feel a twinge of annoyance at paying that website to promote your messages to their own followers.” Minds.com will also be powered by open-source software, meaning tech savvy users could adapt its code to create social networks themselves. “We are a free and open-source platform to launch your digital brand, social network and mobile app,” states the website. “We are also a social network ourselves. It is a global social network of social networks.” Minds chief executive Bill Ottman told CNET that the peer review nature of open source code will also be beneficial to user privacy. “A lot of companies will claim privacy and say they’re encrypted. But it’s not real encryption because we have no way of inspecting the code to see if there are backdoors,” Ottman said, noting that having people with programing skills constantly test the code is the best way to keep it secure. Minds is live now and can be accessed on the web and via iOS and Android apps. __._,_.___ ------------------------------ Posted by: "Beowulf" <[email protected]> ------------------------------ Visit Your Group <https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/grendelreport/info;_ylc=X3oDMTJmczJjanA1BF9TAzk3MzU5NzE0BGdycElkAzIwMTk0ODA2BGdycHNwSWQDMTcwNTMyMzY2NwRzZWMDdnRsBHNsawN2Z2hwBHN0aW1lAzE0MzQ2MzMyNTU-> - New Members <https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/grendelreport/members/all;_ylc=X3oDMTJnbzd2MGVpBF9TAzk3MzU5NzE0BGdycElkAzIwMTk0ODA2BGdycHNwSWQDMTcwNTMyMzY2NwRzZWMDdnRsBHNsawN2bWJycwRzdGltZQMxNDM0NjMzMjU1> 1 [image: Yahoo!
