Encrypting data at rest is vital, but it’s just not happening

The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) has been clear
about encrypting personal data, both in its guidelines and in recent data
breach investigations. But according to Chris Gatford, director of
penetration testing firm Hacklabs, very few organisations are living up to
expectations.

“Encrypted file systems, especially encrypting data at rest, it just
doesn’t occur,” Gatford told ZDNet. “Ninety nine percent of organisations
do not encrypt anything other than the occasional laptop.”

7 Development AppSec Tricks to Keep the Hackers Away

The mammoth rise in cybercrime
<http://www.tripwire.com/state-of-security/regulatory-compliance/pci/cybercrime-is-now-more-profitable-than-the-drug-trade/>
has made organizations revise their application security strategy and
implement new techniques to safeguard their software. This is largely
because traditional security methodologies, such as Manual Testing and Web
Application Firewalls (WAF), have been rendered irrelevant due to evolving
hacking techniques.

Unlike old times, more and more organizations today are concentrating their
efforts towards bolstering the foundation core of their software – the
application code.

organizations striving to improve code integrity, and boost the robustness
of their web/mobile applications on Trip Wire

Confusion, Lack of Visibility Plague Security Policy

Even though 60% of executives said in a recent survey that they believe
they can “truthfully assure the board beyond a reasonable doubt” that their
organizations are secure, the reality is that up to 97% of organizations
have been breached.

A study <https://redseal.co/infographic> from security analytics company
RedSeal of C-level CEOs, CIOs and CISOs/CSOs found that, after digging a
little deeper, less than a third of all respondents, 32%, claim they have
full visibility into their global network.

Time to Embrace Cloud Security as a Service

If you’ve heard it once, chances are, you’ve heard it a hundred times:
organizations still hesitant to adopt to the cloud feel this way because of
a perceived lack of security. For managed service providers (MSPs), this
puts the onus on you to provide them with comfort in your ability to secure
their sensitive data and provide a safe means of travel for cloud-based
file sharing.

Hack attacks ‘discourage’ investment in targeted companies

Almost four in five investors would be discouraged from investing in a
company that has been hacked in a cyber-attack for fear that compromised
information would lower its value, according to research by KPMG.

In a survey of 133 global institutional investors with more than $3 tn in
assets under management, 79 percent say they would be ‘discouraged’ from
investing in hacked companies, while 86 percent of investors see
cyber-security as a growth area.

Chinese police are unprepared to handle terror threat

As the global terror threat increases, some are arguing that China’s local
police forces are not yet prepared to deal with the threat. Fan Xin, an
LAPD police veteran, discussed the need for changes:

“A big city will normally have more than 10,000 policemen, and all those
policemen should have basic anti-terrorism skills. This allows for an
instant response to deal with terrorism events, instead of training an
elite force of a couple of hundred officers and waiting for them to arrive
at a scene.”

Why the West is now more vulnerable to terrorism

As terrorist groups such as Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State “metastasize”
and expand their operations and as unprecedented cyberattacks hit sensitive
government data, western countries are becoming “demoralized” and weaker,
says the Daily Star’s David Ignatius.

One of the major sources of vulnerability comes from Silicon Valley. In the
post-Snowden era, tech companies are more bashful than ever about giving
the government access to encrypted data. Now Homeland Security Secretary
Jeh Johnson is asking firms to think about public safety.

Is Your Security Operation Hooked On Malware?

Is your enter cyber security operation targeted to focus on malware,
read Giora Engel’s commentary on Dark Reading :

Whether the goal of a malware attack is ad-clicks, creating a botnet, or
doing something more damaging, no one can dispute that preventing and
combating these infestations are an important focus for security groups.
But too often, this battle can overshadow an even bigger threat to an
organization: a targeted data breach, which takes a very different
orientation and set of tools.

The Ever-Evolving Cyber Threat to Planes

Hackers and cyber-terrorists present an ever-evolving threat to airlines,
with experts constantly testing for new vulnerabilities, including the fear
that drones could be used to throw a plane off course.

Most agree hacking a plane would be a near-impossible feat, but some
professional hackers have claimed airline computer systems are riddled with
weaknesses that could allow someone to break in, perhaps even through the
in-flight entertainment system.

June 2015: The Month of the Breach?

With so many data breaches taking place in the month of June 2015, Harriet
Cohen says that it should be declared the month of hack on Digital Guardian:

>From the very large to the very small, the drumbeat of stolen data
continues. This blog post lists the more – and less – notable data breaches
announced in the last two weeks. While some of these breaches have received
very little press attention, they are no less important for those people
whose information has been stolen.
