It’s No Longer Just Confederate Flags, There’s a New Expression of
‘Southern Pride’ Under Attack Now

By Kyle Becker <http://www.ijreview.com/author/kyle/>

What’s the first thing you think of when you see the word ‘Dixie’?

Dixie Cups, Dixie Chicks, ‘I wish I was in Dixie…’?

In Winston-Salem, North Carolina, an issue has been raised with the
expression of antebellum Southern pride: It may be “divisive.” Racist, even.

Why is that? Because the dictionary definition of “Dixie” has a strong
overlap with the term “Confederacy”: “The States of the Southeast United
States and especially those which constituted the Confederacy.”

And because a maniacal shooter from Charleston had a confederate flag, and
that is kinda sorta connected to the term “Dixie,” that means it is likely
to be a symbol of “racism” and “hate.” Or so some people claim.

In July, a CNN/ORC poll found
<http://www.cnn.com/2015/07/02/politics/confederate-flag-poll-racism-southern-pride/>
that 57% believed the Confederate flag was a symbol of “Southern pride,”
while 33% found it to be a symbol of “racism.”

WFMY reports
<http://www.wfmynews2.com/story/news/local/2015/08/11/should-dixie--removed--winston-salems-dixie-classic-fair/31499541/>
further on a question that has some North Carolinians and other Southerners
bothered:

Should the word “Dixie” be removed from the Dixie Classic Fair?

That was the question raised Monday night, during a Winston-Salem committee
meeting, the home of the annual fair. It’s the second largest fair in North
Carolina. The finance committee was looking at ideas to bring more people
to the fair and Councilman James Taylor Jr. brought up concerns some voters
told him they had with the word “Dixie” in the fair’s title.

There you have it. If some people think a word is “divisive,” it might be
time to change it or ban it. And if the fair were to ever change its name
from the “Dixie Classic Fair,” what will be the next “offensive” phrase or
thing that “has to go”?
