Let's consider who FBI Director James Comey is. He is a lifelong
Republican, who donated funds to the two candidates who ran against Barack
Obama. When Mr. Comey was acting attorney general under President George W.
Bush, he famously raced to the hospital where then-Attorney General John
Ashcroft was undergoing surgery. At the hospital, he was met by then White
House Chief of Staff Andrew Card and then-White House Counsel Alberto
Gonzalez. Messrs. Card and Gonzalez were there to lobby Mr. Ashcroft to
certify the continued domestic surveillance by the National Security
Agency. Mr. Ashcroft affirmed Mr. Comey’s decision not to certify
continuation of that program. Mr. Comey threatened to resign if the White
House ignored the Justice Department’s advice on this issue.
Do you really believe that Mr. Comey is now likely to be successfully
lobbied by a Democratic president?.
