One of the best ways to illustrate the difference that I have heard is as follows: 3 men are in a lifeboat with only enough food and water for 2. In a pure democracy, 2 could vote to throw the third overboard to save their own lives and it would be perfectly legal. This is despotism by democracy and it is what our founders wanted to avoid. In a constitutionally limited republic, the 2 cannot vote to take away the God given right to life of the 3rd. What we see the progressives pushing for now is mob rule by democratic processes. Kind of like how Hitler came to power. We all see daily examples of the growing Fascism of the left. Progressives love it, conservatives are rightfully concerned. That is why the progressives want to disarm the citizens, so we can be easily cowed into submission by threat of force, once again very similar to why Hitler confiscated guns.
