Since 2000, about 40,000 troops from all branches of the military have deserted, also according to the Pentagon. More than half of these served in the US Army. Approximately 50,000 American servicemen deserted during the Vietnam War. Over 20,000 American soldiers were tried and sentenced for desertion during World War Two. 49 were sentenced to death, though 48 of these death sentences were subsequently commuted. The Union Army <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_Army> faced large scale desertions. The total number of Union deserters far exceeded that of the South <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_of_the_Confederate_States_of_America> .[27] <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desertion#cite_note-North-27>[28] <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desertion#cite_note-South-28> Through late 1863, the South had more victories than did the North, leading many northern soldiers to believe that the war was a lost cause. In three Northern states alone, desertions exceeded 87,000.
