This is something that has always bothered me. That the Republican party
seems to actively discourage anyone who isn't a born again evangelical
Christian.
It is off putting to many who would support the party. If they would tone
it down a bit they would gain many more voters than the few, if any,  they
would lose.

It is possible to be a conservative and not be a bible basher.

Interestingly most of my atheist friends are also small "c" conservatives.
Because the conservative belief of less government in people's private
lives fits with atheist philosophy.
