He picked Pence for one reason and one reason only - party unity. He grasps that the establishment republicans who dominate the GOP in Washington and in the state legislatures and governor's offices all over America hold Pence in high regard - and certainly in far higher regard than they would ever hold Newt Gingrich or Chris Christie.
The left and the media like to portray Trump supporters as uneducated, unthinking idiots. I can tell you that I live in a very upper class neighborhood in an affluent suburb in the Midwest. And I'm absolutely shocked at the cross-section of support Trump has here. I was walking my dog the other night when I came upon a neighboring family (a mom, dad, and college student daughter). We talked about all sorts of things, and I was careful to not bring up politics or the election. However, one of them brought it up. And this family of 3 - 2 of whom are college-educated - are all voting for Trump. The night before on one of those walks I encountered another family who lived across the street from this one and the exact same thing had happened. Both of them are college-educated as well. And what's more surprising is that they are New Englanders who moved here; I had always assumed they were probably very liberal in their political views. I was wrong; they are voting for Trump as well. A couple of weeks ago I visited family in Ohio, and again was careful to not bring up politics or the election. On my last day there, a cousin brought it up and I learned that every single one of my relatives there - half of them educated and half of them working class - were voting for Trump. My husband is an educated man who works at a factory that employs UAW members as half of its workforce. He interacts with them daily and has been surprised to see these union workers almost universally saying "F the union, I'm voting for Trump". They even wear their MAGA hats and Trump t-shiirts to work, lol. My point is, the characterization of the typical Trump voter is something the ignorant leftists in this country tell themselves to soothe their anxiety. It's the exact same thing they did with the Tea Party, only the Trump movement is far more widespread and reaches into far more segments of society. Those who support him won't be dissuaded by the fact that he picked a conservative republican as a running mate in order to show the establishment republicans that he really can negotiate and play ball with them (that he can be reasonable) while the fact is - he remains the ultimate authority when it comes to what he decides to do throughout the campaign and beyond. He threw them a bone in naming Mike Pence and nothing more.
