It's the cupping treatments he and others are getting. I recall taking friends to a local acupuncturist in the 80s for them. They had to be driven to and from, as they were like zombies immediately following the treatments. They'd go home and crash for about 8-10 hours and then wake up and be on the most energy-filled high for several days. it was like they were on injected amphetamines or something. They're not just for pain or soreness as I've read in a couple of articles on the olympic athletes using them. They're more for detoxing the body/blood and ridding it of "junk" that is unhealthy and slows you down. I watched a couple of times and was astonished at the black tarry gunk that came out of people's bodies when they were cupped.
Personally I never did the cupping treatments, but did have acupuncture (needles) a few times.
