NO way! I'm not sure where you live, but I heard on tv last week the best explanation for why being a democracy that elects its leaders by popular voter only is a horrible idea. In the US, a candidate for POTUS could promise "stuff" to New York City, Boston, Miami, Houston, L.A., Chicago, and a handful of other huge metro areas and win the election without ever trying to get a vote from anywhere else in the country. That's insane, and would be especially insane in a large country like the US with so many people who don't live in urban areas (and don't want to).
A representative democracy prevents that.
