"A prominent Russian diplomat has passed away while at work. We'd like to express our sincere condolences to Vitaly Churkin's family," the ministry said in the statement. The foreign ministry's official Facebook account said in a post <https://www.facebook.com/MIDRussia/posts/975093402590101> that Churkin "died in harness" a day ahead of this 65th birthday. They provided no further details of the circumstances surrounding his death. The Russian embassy in the United States called his passing a "[t]remendous loss for Russian diplomacy" in a tweet <https://twitter.com/RusEmbUSA/status/833733448107954177> Monday. Former U.S. ambassador to the U.N.
