Thompson 26th July, 2017 Now that the Internet and social media have given everyone a voice, it is clear that some people have never taken the training wheels off the bicycles of their intellects before they went out to play in heavy traffic. Occasionally, in summer it is always possible one might invite the wrong people to a BBQ or party. Their internet vocabulary can provide adequate warning. Human invective is always inventive and rich with meaning – making it always interesting to study. Alas, the over-use of particular terms such as “Snowflake”, “SJW”, “Teabagger” or “Trumpkin” as a derogatory shorthand suggest the writer doesn’t get out much and has limited contact with the broader human race. Socializing with real people presents them with great difficulties. Be wary about hosting people who use the following terms; acute social awkwardness could ensue: “CONservatives”: The term implies all conservatives are con-artists, or are themselves conned into their perspectives. Its use suggests the writer is too overwrought to be capable of compromise, negotiation or rationally exercising their franchise. Users will make special demands of their host or hostess and criticize what is available. “Lieberals”: As above, albeit with different application. They will clean out your beer stocks and never touch the crudites or dip. “Sheeple”: An informal accusation by a writer who considers most other people are docile, ignorant and much like sheep. Writers who use it consider themselves to be masters of wisdom and far more aware than the Hoi Polloi… Usually used by conspiracy myth addicts, and angry ideologues. They will invade your personal space and angrily hound your other guests as they monopolize conversation. “[xxxx}tards”: This suffix may be appended to some choice Anglo-Saxon slur of some kind or a political tag (hence “fucktard” or “Libtard”). The suffix resurrects the old slur of ‘retard’ although it can also refer to ‘bastard’. It implies that the subject of the sentence is some kind of swine who is not worthy of breathing oxygen on this planet. It also implies that the writer has strong opinions on politics or economics, yet seldom bothers to bestir themselves from their parent’s basement. Expect bad breath and body odor. Texters: After years of digital short-hand, most of us are expected to understand – and perhaps occasionally use – the likes of LOL, LMAO, or VBG. People who know more of these acronyms than you do and who seldom bother to put them in upper case are the very worst sort of party guests. However, texters have significant entertainment value if your party involves bumper cars, canoes, affectionate dogs, lawn sprinklers or anything else requiring situational awareness. A fascinating party game for downtowners involves texting such guests navigating instructions that involve a four-way crosswalk that you can see from your residence. It can be fun party game to bet on which ones actually make it. ********************* If you like this blog, feel free to share it.
